I'm sorry to learn that John Vlissides, of Design Pattern fame, died last December. See this obit.

For those not in the software development business, John was a pioneer of design patterns, which are proven object-oriented approaches to common software design problems. His book, Design Patterns, is right up there with Djykstra's Structured Programming, IMHO.
